Growth – My Game for Ludum Dare 34

Hey everyone, it’s Chan Oh here! Today, I want to share with you my experience creating a game for the Ludum Dare 34 competition. For those who missed the live stream, let me fill you in on the details.

Ludum Dare is a 48-hour game programming competition where participants have to create a game from scratch based on a theme that is revealed at the start of the competition. This time, there were two themes: “growing” and “two-button controls.”

I decided to combine both themes in my game because it allowed me to create a unique and challenging experience. The idea of growth reminded me of plants and nature, so I envisioned a game where a plant would grow upwards. To bring my vision to life, I developed a curve rendering engine that would create a visually appealing experience.

Initially, I started using Unreal Engine, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t the right fit for my game. I wanted to use software rendering and create my own curved rendering engine, so I switched to Java. This decision allowed me to fully realize my idea and create a game that I was passionate about.

The objective of the game is simple: achieve the highest score possible. As you guide the growing plant, your score increases with each rock you destroy along the way. It’s an endless runner-style game where the challenge lies in reaching higher scores.

During the development process, everything went smoothly. I spent around 10 to 12 hours on the game, and the music, which I composed myself, took me just 40 minutes to complete. The whole development process felt fluid, and I was happy with the end result.

The game turned out to be vertical, which made me consider the possibility of porting it to mobile devices. If there is enough interest, I might release it as a mobile game in the future.

I invite you to try out the game and let me know your thoughts. The link to play the game will be available in the description of this video. If you have any suggestions or if there’s anything specific you’d like me to cover, please leave a comment below.

I hope you enjoy playing the game as much as I enjoyed creating it. Don’t forget to hit the like button if you found this video helpful, and I’ll see you all next time. Goodbye!
